Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, we celebrate the incredible Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, a important figure in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and a proponent for peaceful protest in order to gain equal rights for the black community and beyond.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta Georgia in 1929. After studying at Boston University, he received his doctorate in theology in 1955. Shortly after, he helped organize the first major protest of the Civil Rights Movement, the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In 1957, he was elected as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

During his time in this role, he traveled to nearly every corner of the United States to attend protests and gave over 2,500 speeches. Some of his most popular works include his “I Have a Dream” speech and his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”.

Dr. King’s work helped lead to the eventual passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. His legacy still continues on today in the fight to end inequality and provide the black community and other POC with access to education, voting resources, healthy living conditions, equal pay, and more.
